OGC Buying Solutions changes name to improve performance and brand clarity
As from 6th April 2009 OGC buying solutions change their name to Buying Solutions.
This will also consolidate the brands currently known as Catalist and Managed Services to produce a more consistent brand of Buying Solutions Supplier.
The focus on Buying Solutions reflects the new brand values of clarity and simplification, which translates into naming things clearly.
On the go live date we shall be changing
all of our current Catalist branding for the
new Buying Solutions Supplier branding to
aid in the transition and the communication
of the new corporate identity.
OGC Buying Solutions want to develop Buying Solutions as a single, unified brand with immediate market recognition. Research has shown that whilst there is high awareness of the Catalist brand, customers don't understand what the name means. Our focus on Buying Solutions reflects our new brand values of clarity and simplification, which translates into naming things clearly.
There is a comprehensive brand transition plan in place. OGC Buying Solutions will be supporting the new corporate identity and re-brand with significant marketing activity to generate maximum awareness of Buying Solutions.
To aid the transition, the triangle part of the Catalist logo
will continue to be used as research has shown that customer recognition is high.
There will be the introduction of a new Buying Solutions' accredited supplier logo. This logo will incorporate the triangle for a transitional period until the new corporate identity and logo are established. We will also use the triangle symbol on our web site in the transition phase.
There will also be a new website address
for 'Buying Solutions' at the following
address:

Maggie Hartford meets the team behind computer technology revolutionising how young people learn
- Oxford Times In Business Magazine. The world of computing has changed immeasurably since Mike Gill set up in business in 1987. At the time, most suppliers simply sold equipment – it was up to the customer to decide what to do with it, and how it should fit together.
European Electronique, based in Eynsham, was one of the first 'system integrators', providing organisations with what they needed to do the tasks they were tackling. He said: "We were able to provide support and maintenance, which led to the development of some enduring customer relationships."

The business really took off after he met his Polish wife, Yolanta, who is now managing director. Having studied law in Warsaw, followed by an MBA at Oxford Brookes University, she brought new expertise to the company.
Its exotic-sounding name came because originally much of its business was in Europe.
Over the past five years, the company has expanded rapidly in the UK, and gradually concentrated its efforts here. Earlier this year, it recruited seven staff - including technical manager Garry Street - from another UK computing pioneer, Evesham Technology, which went into administration.
In the past five years, turnover has grown by 20 to 25 per cent a year. By March 2008, turnover was £31 m and the workforce is now 132-strong. Mrs Gill said: "Although the general public might not know much about us, we are very well-known and respected nationally and locally within academic and public-sector organisations."
Among its local work is a one-stop shop terminal system for visitors and staff at Cherwell District Council's headquarters, Bodicote House, in Banbury. The company is about to become even more well-known locally, since it has just won the contract to set up the Information and Communications Technology for Oxford's first academy. This will be created in September at what was Peers School. Jointly sponsored by the Oxford Diocese of the Church of England and Oxford Brookes University, the academy will move to new buildings in 2010.
While its growth has been rapid, European Electronique is still only one-tenth the size of rivals such as Oxfordshire-based RM. However, academies have become a bit of a specialism for the company, since the transformation of Peers will mark its 31st academy project. She said: "Our record with the Government's academy programme is second to none, having won in excess of 30 academy projects”. "We are also a respected supplier on most important national public-sector frameworks, including Catalist and Becta, and dozens of regional frameworks."
Mrs Gill said: "Although by no means the biggest contract we have delivered in terms of monetary worth, the Oxford Academy contract is valuable to us in other ways because it is a part of our community and a local project with which we are very proud to be associated. "As the UK's most successful provider of ICT to academies, we have our history of 30 other academy projects to draw on, so we are a very comfortable fit with projects on this scale." She added: "Initially, the solution is an interim one, to cover the two years until the new buildings are ready.
"We will install a scalable, stable, core network that will move with them to the new campus." The 'jewel in the crown' will be the learning resource centre, where computer terminals are built into bespoke furniture. The system will use 'thin-client' technology, with software and data all held on central servers. The computer terminals that students use in the classroom are 'dumb', in that they have no hard disk, which means they last longer – up to 20 years - and are less likely to be stolen.
Every teacher will have a new laptop and access to a new wireless network. Leslie Stephen, director of education at the Diocese of Oxford, said: "We are looking forward to working with European Electronique. We were all very impressed with the team's presentation, particularly the enthusiasm, the technological vision and solutions and the commitment to help harness ICT to improve the lives of young people." Mrs Gill said: "We are absolutely delighted with winning the project and very proud to be associated with Oxford Academy. We are confident in our ability to offer the academy an innovative approach to fostering excellent learning and teaching through ICT. "We are sure that the academy will have a profound impact on the regeneration of the local community and we are honoured to be a part of the process."

Winner: National Patient Safety Agency - Clean Your Hands campaign
The National Patient Safety Agency’s cleanyourhands campaign aims to improve the hand hygiene of healthcare workers and prevent healthcare associated infection. Since the campaign launch in September 2004, it has been adopted by all acute NHS trusts in England and Wales.
Year 3 of the campaign was launched in December 2007, following a programme of research undertaken to inform the strategic approach. This included a feedback event with 125 local campaign coordinators, face-to-face interviews with infection control nurses and a survey of over 300 healthcare workers.
The research identified that a general lack of clarity existed amongst staff regarding the correct hand hygiene procedure, and indicated that harder-hitting messages and materials that stand out more in hospital settings were required. Working with UK design agency 999 design, a number of concepts were developed and refined. The new materials are direct and have great visual high impact, and use a black background, ensuring stand out within the hospital environment. Other new developments include provision of artwork for t-shirts, stickers and floor vinyl so that NHS trusts can produce additional items locally.
Independent evaluation has already demonstrated the campaign’s effectiveness in changing behaviour. Materials and experiences have been shared with other healthcare organisations and systems around the world, including the USA, Ireland, Mexico and Canada.

Oxfordshire based VAR, European Electronique has spent the winter
months expanding its business both in terms of contracts and staff.
Its acquisition of several key members from Evesham Technology, as
they went into administration, has assisted with the rapid growth
experienced over recent months. This expansion will continue as
European Electronique enters the Building Schools for The Future

Projects.
Among those recruited from Evesham Technology is Garry Street
who joined European Electronique as the Technical Services
Manager in January this year. In addition the company has
recruited another six highly skilled staff from the engineering,
support and sales departments of Evesham Technology, augmenting
the considerable skill set already in place at European Electronique.
Garry is responsible for overseeing larger contracts including the
prestigious Oasis Community Learning project won by European
Electronique last year.
The contract will provide a fully managed
service to over 15,000 users and delivery of 12 nationwide academy

acquired after Evesham Technology went into administration.

Oxfordshire VAR European Electronique has teamed up with Cherwell District Council to help improve customer and staff access to the council’s services at Bodicote
House in Banbury. The new One Stop Shop council
embraces an environmentally efficient, greener
ICT solution. It will also comply with the
Disability Discrimination Act bringing services
together on the ground floor of the building
allowing customers to access all departments and
facilities from a single location.
Portfolio Holder for Customer Service
and ICT, Cllr Nicholas Turner, said:
"Cherwell District Council's One Stop Shop
approach is being hailed as a model of good
practice. It has been built in partnership
with public and private sector organisations
and it is just the first stage in our
journey towards excellence. European
Electronique have worked closely with ICT
staff at the Council to ensure that their
technology fully meets the needs of our
staff and customers while delivering an
efficient, value-for-money service.
Together, we will be monitoring the One Stop
Shop closely in its early days, building on
successes in preparation for the next stage
in our customer service revolution.”
The pilot scheme is based on Sun Microsystems Thin Client Technology delivering environmentally friendly centralised computing using Microsoft Windows Terminal Services. Running on virtualised platforms (VMWare ESX 3) ensures that the system is energy efficient and cost effective. Each thin client unit uses only 4 watts of power and increases the client (PC) refresh cycle from 3 years to between 10 and 20 years.
Enabling Ultra Thin Client and Remote Access in Education - 23rd and 29th April 2008
Using the Sun Microsystems thin client
technology we held two seminars for
education in April to promote the vast
savings that can be achieved through rolling
out a virtualised system. With experienced
sales managers and technical experts we
provided our delegates with an informative
seminar that created many opportunities for
us to supply and install the product.
The seminars lasted a morning and were held
at Sun Microsystems offices in Coventry and
Camberley. There was also no cost for the
seminar.
The day consisted of the following:
Introductions
An explanation of the technology
Demonstrations
Customer case study
Reviews of successful deployment
Refreshments throughout the morning
We found the seminars to be extremely
successful and most people who attended
requested that we arrange visits to there
institutions to further demo and discuss
thin client and virtualisation.
UCISA - 12th to 14th March 2008
Another show that we attend yearly steps up

technology used in the corporate world which
is to be adapted to the education vertical.
UCISA represents the whole of higher education, and increasingly further education, in the provision and development of academic, management and administrative information systems, providing a network of contacts and a powerful lobbying voice.
With our relationships with vendors such as Sun, VM Ware and Jacarta we were able to relay our experience and knowledge to the delegates at the conference. Providing a source of technical expertise we managed place ourselves in front of key decision makers of up and coming projects within the Higher Education and Further Education sectors.
