What Is Cyber Resilience?

Cyber resilience means being ready for cyber threats—not just trying to stop them, but being able to recover quickly if something goes wrong.  It’s about protecting your school’s data, systems, and reputation.

Why Schools Must Be Cyber Resilient?

In today’s digital world, schools rely heavily on technology—for learning, communication, and managing sensitive data.  But with this reliance comes risk. Cyberattacks on schools are rising, and the consequences can be serious: lost coursework, disrupted lessons, and even school closures.

Why It Matters for Schools?

  • Schools are targets: Hackers know schools often have weaker defences and valuable data.
  • Attacks are increasing: Over 60% of secondary schools and 85% of colleges have faced cyber incidents in the past year.
  • Recovery is slow: Even with better training, many schools struggle to bounce back quickly after an attack.

What Schools Should Do:

  • Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of data, on 2 different devices, with 1 stored off-site.
Test backups regularly to make sure they work.
  • Use free training from the NCSC to help staff spot phishing emails and protect passwords.
Encourage a culture of reporting issues without blame.
  • Install firewalls, antivirus software, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA).
    Keep systems updated and patched.
  • The Department for Education has clear cyber security standards for schools, including filtering, monitoring, and user account controls.
  • This government-backed scheme helps schools prove they’re taking cyber security seriously. It’s especially useful for Multi Academy Trusts (MATs).
