Navigating a New Digital Landscape

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, so do the opportunities and challenges that it brings to education. Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini are changing the way students learn, teachers teach, and schools operate. With this rapid transformation comes a crucial responsibility: ensuring student safety in an AI-driven world.

Join us on 3rd of January for our upcoming live learning session, AI & Student Digital Safety, hosted by Smoothwall and EE. We’ll explore the key issues and practical strategies schools need to stay ahead of the curve.

What is Generative AI?

In case you’re not sure what Generative AI is, it refers to a type of artificial intelligence designed to create new content. For example, it can produce text, images, videos, and even computer code in response to user prompts. These tools are powered by large language models (LLMs), which are trained on vast datasets that enable them to understand, summarize, and generate human-like content.

Artificial intelligence is evolving rapidly, with new tools emerging almost daily. While this presents exciting opportunities for education, it also raises important questions about online safety, data protection, and the quality of generated content.

The DfE’s Guidance on Generative AI:

According to the Department for Education (DfE), schools and colleges have the discretion to decide whether and how to use AI tools. The guidance emphasizes that, if approved, these technologies should be implemented safely, responsibly, and effectively.

An example of this is teachers might use AI to automate administrative tasks. To free up more time for meaningful teaching and student engagement. However, clear policies and safeguards must be in place to ensure responsible use.
